Quite simply: colleges are full up of people. When people lose jobs, they go back to school, and regardless of what the national unemployment percentage looks like (as it doesn't include those who are actually on unemployment) we're looking at nearly 20% unemployment all around.
This is not a judgment of your capabilities or your intelligence. I know a lot of people who are trying to get into college and it's just really hard right now. I have friends who are just like you who are looking to get into grad school, but were turned down by every single school.
