Writer's Block: A rose by any other name ...

[Error: unknown template qotd]
Huh... I just realize, you guys might not know... it's so simple, but I love it. And it's so nerdy.

I made my LJ when I was first getting into geekdom and fandoms. And one of my first real fandoms was Lord of the Rings, which I still absolutely adore. And I was enough of a fan that I would actually go online and find fansites, particularly ones that had English->Elvish and Elvish->English translations.

And then one fansite had a section under their Elvish section that had name translations. So, naturally, I looked up my own name there, and it's "Ardhoniel." Which is, phonetically, Arthoniel. Which is, as you may have noticed, my username.

And that's how my username was born~ And I've never regretted it- I still lurves it these... wow, about 3 years later.

What about you guys? If you didn't make a post about it, how did you come up with your usernames?

In one of the earliest episodes of Sailor Moon, like, episode three, Usagi has to fight this monster that's a TEACHER and it asks you school type questions and if you get them WRONG IT ATTACKS YOU. So of course Usagi is really dull, so Ami had to come and save the day and that's the first Sailor Mercury episode! The monster's name is GAROBEN monster of KNOWLEDGE. :D

Oh hey, that's pretty awesome! Oh, Sailor Moon, by the way. Yay nostalgia! XD

nathair_aonad, means, literally, serpent group.

Unliterally? Someone deceptive. Also, the Cobra Unit from Metal Gear Solid 3

That's pretty cool~ I keep meaning to get into that, I've heard it's really good, but I haven't had the time... I will though! Eventually...

This is an awesome prompt, because I have been wondering that about you for ages.

Anyway, mine is from a Tori Amos song, Crucify, which is about guilt and judging yourself based on other people's standards and a lot of other things. One of the lines is "I know a cat named Easter, he says 'Will you ever learn? You're just an empty cage, girl, if you kill the bird.'" I chose it because I thought it was pretty, but it's come to have a lot of symbolic meaning for me. I have a lot of things about me that I try to keep hidden (any vulnerability, a lot of my interests and fears) because I don't want people to know about them, or because I don't like them. And sometimes I need a reminder that if I actually killed those parts of me, I wouldn't have much left. I want very badly to be a perfect girl, the kind who never cries and never feels overwhelmed and always does her homework and doesn't forget how to think when someone's kissing her. But that's not going to happen, and when I get past my fears about being imperfect or being vulnerable, I can admit that a lot of the things I'm uncomfortable with are really good.

If this didn't make sense, I'm sorry. I might be sick.

[identity profile] arthoniel.livejournal.com 2010-01-25 02:59 am (UTC)(link)
No, it made sense... actually, it really made perfect sense, and explained a lot for me. I had been wondering about your username too, because it seemed so... constrictive, especially for you. That makes a lot more sense now though~

By the way. It's totally not okay for you to be sick. You need to feel better. Now.

[identity profile] aerodactylus.livejournal.com 2010-01-25 03:06 am (UTC)(link)
There was a brief period in high school, during my junior year, where people would always yell "Pterodactyl!" and I would make this weird noise that was supposed to be what said extinct reptile sounded like. This was also the time when I was getting into fandom (my FFN name is The Pterodactyl). When I got an LJ a couple months later, I didn't want them to be the same, but I still liked the sound of "pterodactyl," so I started playing with it in my head...and came up with Aerodactylus, which is a portmanteau of Aerodactyl (one of my favorite Pokemon), and Pterodactylus (which is an actual species of pterosaur).

So yeah, it's disjunct and doesn't make much sense even in my head, but there you go.

Also, in case you couldn't tell, I LOVE paleontology.

[identity profile] arthoniel.livejournal.com 2010-01-26 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
That's pretty awesome~ I didn't even know that's a real species of pterosaur... but I'm not that into paleontology. That's cool that you are though- I wouldn't have the patience to learn the names of all the species and everything. XD

Mine comes from Kingdom Hearts. When someone loses their heart, they become a Nobody. The name of a Nobody is an anagram of their previous name + an X. So Sora -> Roxas and Ansem -> Xemnas and so on. I am Elizabeth, so I am -> Zalixethbe. :)

[identity profile] arthoniel.livejournal.com 2010-01-26 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
Oh wow, that's so cool! I mean, I didn't know that about Kingdom Hearts to begin with, but that you did that to your own name too is awesome~

[identity profile] zalixethbe.livejournal.com 2010-01-26 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
Haha. It sounds unique and clever now that I'm not so much in KH fandom, but back in the day I certainly wasn't the only one. In fact, I've even met someone else whose username was a Nobody form of Elizabeth!

[identity profile] arthoniel.livejournal.com 2010-01-26 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
Fff. Well. Now it sounds unique, and that's what matters, amirite? XD

[identity profile] nightshot2.livejournal.com 2010-01-25 04:00 am (UTC)(link)
My twin sister and I used my username for a lot of things back during the latter half of middle school. It hearkens back to our X-Men fandom days. The "night" part comes from my favorite X-Man, Nightcrawler. The "shot" part comes from one of my sister's favorite X-Men, Longshot. We mushed the two names together and out popped Nightshot. We tacked the 2 on the end because there were two of us sharing the username. Only recently did I find out that Nightshot is also a type of gun. Which is kind of cool, but not as geeky cool. lol!

Well, for starters, I didn't know that you're a twin! But yay fandom references in usernames~ XD

ME TOO.

Okay, so I first started writing fanfiction back when I was 12/the summer before grade 8. At the time I was really obsessed with InuYasha, Yu-Gi-Oh and Beyblade. So of course, I wrote fanfiction for all of them and in my n00bness, wrote fanfiction with OC's in them. In the one (and only) Beyblade fanfic I wrote, my OC was a competitor and her Beyblade's name was Kurasari. It was abandoned a week later.

Skip ahead two-three years and I'm signing up for LJ when I discover a problem: the name I usually use on the internet is TAKEN! BASTARDS! *cough* Anyway I spend hours trying to think of a name I can use that's one word but can't come up with anything. To distract myself I started going through my fanfiction and when I saw that old Beyblade fanfic I remembered I'd made-up a name for my OC's bblade and Kurasari was born.

[identity profile] arthoniel.livejournal.com 2010-01-28 10:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Haha, you know, I actually once had an OC and I nearly made that the name of my journal- Anikalia, or something to that effect... I never wrote anything with her, I just... had her. But that's awesome. Just sayin'. XD
