It's been a few days since Edward threw his original temper tantrum about how Data was obviously insulting him, saying that he can control himself while with another girl, and Edward can't. I'd tried a few times to calm Edward down, but... no. So instead, I tried talking to Data. At least when Edward runs away, Data can catch him.

I brought up the subject while we were both at my desk, looking at the new Star Trek dolls that... I think Playmates is putting out.

"Ew."

"That does not look like the crew of the original Enterprise that I remember."

"No. No it does not. Even if they are supposed to be younger than what you remember... just... ew."

And then we had one of those moments. You know those moments where it's a little quiet and awkward and you both know one of you is about to say something, but... you just can't quite get it out? Yeah, one of those. Or, at least I felt it. I don't think he could... but that's not the point.

"I think you should try talking to Edward."

"I would try, but I do not think he is willing to listen."

"He probably isn't. But I think it's more important to him right now that you try. That you prove you're still a person to him."

"But I am not."

"... I know that. But... he needs a friend right now. He's separated from his kind, he misses Bella, he's being forced to live off of cotton balls-"

"Ah, so that is what you are feeding him. You said you would take care of it, but I was curious how..."

"What, was he complaining or something?"

"He did mention once that it does not quite compare to the taste of mountain lion blood..."

It still keeps him from trying to eat Spot or something.... Anyway! He's feeling depressed right about now, so you just need to show him that you're still there for him, in some way, shape or form."

"However, you said yourself that he is probably not willing to listen. Are you sure that it is worth the time to try talking to him now? Would it not be better to wait until he is calm?"

"Um, it's been nearly a week. If he hasn't calmed down yet, he won't. I... how do you feel about him, Data?"

"You know that I cannot feel any-"

"I meant... how did you define friendship for you again... when you're around someone a lot, you... I don't remember exactly what you said, but you grow used to them being around, so when they're gone, you have to get used to not having them around again, effectively missing them. Is that right?"

"That s the general idea, yes."

"Do you feel that at all about Edward? It doesn't even have to be on the same scale as you feel it for Geordie, but... is there anything?"

"Yes... there is. A little- not as much as it exists for the other members of the Enterprise-D, but yes."

"Then go talk to him!! Or at least try to!! If you have a friendship with Edward, then you should try to help it out, right??"

"I suppose that is one way of thinking about it. I will attempt to discuss it with him soon then."

So after that heartwarming little talk, we both went on our way doing stuff. I worked on my Shiki cosplay some more, and he went and fed Spot, as every time I try to feed him, he scratches me. I forgot what a little devil Spot is... but at least he's stayed solidly on the Shelf. So I'm sitting by my bed, sewing, and suddenly I see a little blur of blue and brown with some pale white at the top fly by me, quickly followed by some yellow and black.
