Author's Notes: Happy holidays kawaiispinel! Sorry I took so very long to post this, but I had to re-write it three times before I got an idea that was any good. Anywho, here you are, and I'll be posting your Tokka fic just as soon as I'm done with this! XD
Adam had nearly died so many times in his life, he couldn’t even count them all. Even before he became the great Takezo Kensei, the man who could heal from any wound, he’d had an incredible amount of near-death experiences. Like when he was around the age of four, and was on the ship to Japan. His father was a merchant, and he wanted to trade with the Japanese, it was very profitable there. They were literally in the middle of the ocean, but Adam wanted to see if he could see Japan from where they were. His father had turned away for a moment, and that’s when he conveniently fell off. And yet somehow, despite the fact that he fell into the ocean, without even knowing how to swim, he survived.
Then there was the time after they’d officially moved to Japan. His father had loved it there so much, he took his whole family there, and stayed. Adam, his parents and his sister all moved there when he was about eight, and it was really quite nice. He supposed that in hindsight, they shouldn’t have lived in one of the paper-walled houses though. And when it caught on fire, his father got out, and his mother literally threw Adam out of the house, and he survived, barely. His mother and sister didn’t.
And after his father had turned to drinking, he really had to be the one who kept the two of them alive. Despite the fact that he was sixteen, he had to farm their land, keep their new house in order, and pay the taxes to the emperor. He did all this to try to protect his father. But there were times when his father would come home drunk. Drunk was when his father would say things that he would later regret, but really did feel. Adam supposed it was natural to feel angry at the world when your beloved wife and beautiful daughter died in a fire. To be angry at the world, to hate everyone, to want to destroy everything must be completely natural. Of course, it’s hard to remember to by sympathetic to these things when just after working hard all day for your father, he comes back home drunk and starts beating you for the third time that week.
He never knew just how many enemies his father had made, just how angry his father had made people when he was drunk until he was stabbed by one of them. His father had always carried a knife for self-defense, but one day he was drunk and started swinging it at people. He came dangerously near to hitting some people too, until one of them tried to stop him. They got into a huge knife fight, and just as Adam had heard about it and run onto the scene, the other man won. And as he sat in an alley, with his father’s head in his lap, his father looked up at him and said, just like he used to when he was younger, “Adam… my miracle boy. You’ve always healed from everything… you can heal from this. You’re… a hero Adam… go on now. Go… save the world,” and he died in his son’s arms. Adam was eighteen.
400 years later Adam was with Peter Petrelli, trying to get to the Company to release the virus. And every night before he fell asleep he thought I’m doing it father. I’m saving the world. And I’m doing it all for you. Is this what you wanted father? Did you want it to be like this?
